Lawrence, GA… The College of New Jersey’s Jackie Shtemberg (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) had a tremendous opening day of singles play at the 2009 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships on Friday as the Lion won both of her matches.

The event is being hosted by Oglethorpe University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission.

The junior opened the day with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Kathryn Schmidt from Carleton College and then posted a huge win over top-seeded Siobhan Finicane from Pomona-Pitzer. In that match, Shtemberg trailed 3-2 in the opening set, before storming back to take the frame 7-5. She then secured the upset win with a convincing 6-1 in the second set.

Those two wins put her at 14-1 in singles play this spring.

Shtemberg advances to the round of eight on Saturday, May 23 at 9 a.m. where she will face Amanda Wu from Carnegie Mellon University.
