Late-inning rally carries Wartburg past TCNJ

Box score

Chandler, AZ... The College of New Jersey baseball surrendered two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as they dropped a 5-3 decision to Wartburg College.

TCNJ (1-3) outhit the Knights 9-7, but couldn't seem to string together enough timely hits to produce a better end result. Sophomore Eric Lewis (Wantagh, NY/W.C. Mepham) threw well for TCNJ giving up just two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out three.

The Lions trailed 2-0 early, but tied the game up  in the sixth inning when freshman Nick Cifelli (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) singled, stole sec.nd base, and raced home on a line drive single by senior Ryan Anzelone (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Twp.)

Warburg answered with a run in the sixtth, but the Lions fought back tying the game up 3-3 in the top of the seventh when freshman Scott Kelly (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor North) legged out an infield single. The throw was late and off-line allowing junior Anthony Palmiotto (Manchester, NJ/Manchester Twp) to score. Palmiotto was the lone Lions player to collect two hits in the game.

But a booming triple by junior Patrick Grau gave the Knights a 4-3 lead and clean-up hitter Drew Yoder followed with an RBI single to secure the win.

Junior Jason Zegarski (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrenceville) and sophomore Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) singled and drove in a run for the Lions. Both starters have hit safely in each of TCNJ's first four games.

The Lions play a pair of games tomorrow taking on Concordia University at 10:00 and then squaring off against before Monmouth College at 2:00 p.m. (MST).
