Chandler, AZ... The College of New Jersey baseball downed Monmouth College (Ill) 12-2 to notch their first win of the season.
Senior Connor Henderson (Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) pitched six strong innings giving up just a pair of runs to earn his first victory of the season. Henderson, a First Team All-NJAC selection a year ago, came up big bringing TCNJ's two-game skid to a grinding halt.
The Lions top of the line-up provided plenty of production as leadoff hitter Jason Zegarski (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored including a triple. Freshman Scott Kelly (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor North) found a couple holes to record his first collegiate hit going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in.
Sophomore catcher Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) supplemented his hot start with three hits and a pair of runs batted in. Senior Chris Esperon (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) also had a solid day at the plate going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and three runs scored.
The story of the game, however, was TCNJ's pitching. Henderson set the tone through six innings and his teammates out of the bullpen followed suit. Sophomore Rick Nuel (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) threw a scoreless seventh inning in his first appearance while A.J. Adamcyk (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) and Joe Marchitelli (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) pitched 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth to close the game out.
The Lions (1-2) square off against Rockford College tomorrow in a double-header beginning at 3 p.m. (MST).
