Shenandoah, Tx … Senior
Danica Roskos (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley), a diver for The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team, made NCAA Division III history by winning the 1-meter diving national title on Friday night at the ISD Conroe Natatorium in Shenandoah, Tx.
Roskos became the first female diver in NCAA Division III history to capture three consecutive national titles in the same event. She topped a field packed with talent, amassing a winning score of 466.65. Two of the divers she defeated are also national title holders;
Ruth Hahn of Trinity College, who placed fourth and
Maria Zarka of Kenyon College, who took third. Hahn won the 3-meter title in 2012 and Marka claimed this year's 3-meter title on Wednesday night.
Kaitlyn Linsmayer of Amherst College was runner-up finisher with a score of 458.85.
Entering the 2013 national championship event, Roskos had company in winning back-to-back titles.
Kama Grattet of Nazareth College claimed the 1-meter dive in 1984 and 1985 and
Elizabeth Olsen of Colorado College won the 1- and 3-meter events back-to-back in 1985 and 1986. Roskos is the lone women's diver ever to claim an event three straight years, and joins Olsen as the only two divers to win four national championship titles. Roskos also won the 3-meter event in 2011 along with her three, 1-meter crowns.
The senior marketing major has achieved all of her accolades alongside her friend and teammate junior
Sabrina Lucchesi (Columbus, NJ/Notre Dame). Lucchesi also had a standout season and national tournament performance as she registered All-American honorable mention honors with a 13
th-place finish. She posted a score of 395.90 to earn her second All-American citation of the tournament and fourth of her career.
Senior
Kayleigh Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) garnered her 18
th All-American citation when she qualified for the championship consolation final in the 100-breaststroke event. She posted a time of 1:05.12 in the final to place 14
th overall in the event. The 18
th All-American honor tied her for the second-highest total in program history with her head coach
Jennifer Harnett '93, who registered 18 citations from 1990 – 1993.
Roskos held a lead entering the final six dives in the evening session. She maintained that advantage and held a 6.10 point lead over Hahn entering the final round of dives. Roskos punctuated her storybook career by tallying a 49.40 in her last dive, the highest of any diver in that final round.
In addition to her achievements in NCAA annals, Roskos became the first student-athlete in TCNJ athletics history to win four individual national titles. Hall of Fame wrestler
Tim Jacoutot won three individual NCAA titles in 1985, 1987, and 1988 competing in the 118-pound weight class. The fourth puts Roskos in a class of her own.
Both Roskos and Lucchesi are students of TCNJ diving coach
Candace Gottlieb. Gottlieb has spearheaded the men's and women's diving program for over 20 years. She mentored Lucchesi and Roskos during all three of their NCAA championship competitions as the twosome has cemented their legacy as the greatest diving tandem in Lions' program history.
Roskos placed second on Wednesday night in the 3-meter event and was named NCAA Diver of the Meet for the third consecutive year. She finished her three-year career at TCNJ with four national titles and six All-American honors in six events. She also hold the NCAA record in the 1-meter event.
Tomorrow, Shangle will compete in the 200-breast in the final event of her exceptional career.
