TCNJ fights past DelVal on Senior Night

Senior Night

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey wrestling team held off Delaware Valley University to claim a victory by criteria on Senior Night in Packer Hall.
 
The #10 Lions and Aggies were locked at 20 points each after 10 bouts, but TCNJ held a 48-45 advantage in points to raise its record to 18-2. Delaware Valley dropped to 5-6 in dual meets this season.
 
It was a back-and-forth battle all night capped by high drama in the final two matches. With the score tied 14-14 entering the 197-pound weight class, sophomore Stephen Boncimino (Freehold, NJ/Howell) registered a pin to put the Lions up 20-14. Aggie junior Zach Roseberry, who is ranked second nationally in the heavyweight division, countered with a win by fall at 4:05. TCNJ accrued more points through the match, sending four seniors off with a victory in their final home contest.
 
Senior Jimmy Gill (Smithtown, NY/St. John the Baptist), Joe Paton (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.), Steven Schneider (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge), and Antonio Mancella (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) were honored prior to match.
 
DelVal took an early 3-0 lead before sophomore James Goldschmidt (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) muscled his way to a 3-2 victory at 133. Schneider and Mancella both earned decisions at 149 and 157, giving the Lions their first lead of the night at 9-8.
 
After the Aggies pushed ahead 11-9, Doug Hamann (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) posted a critical technical fall with an 18-0 triumph at 174. DelVal answered back at 184, setting up the exciting finale in the final two weight classes.
 
TCNJ will hit the sack before rising early to square off against #4 Messiah College at noon tomorrow.
