Boyertown, PA…The Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University handed the Lions of The College on New Jersey an 8-6 loss on Thursday in the second day of action in the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. JHU moves on in the winners bracket with a 2-0 record, while standing at 37-9 overall, while TCNJ drops to 1-1 in the tournament and is now 33-10 overall. TCNJ will take to the field next on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. against Elizabethtown College in an elimination game.
Despite the loss, TCNJ's senior first baseman Blake Bullis (Delran, NJ/Delran) added his name to another school career record when he collected a two RBI single in the seventh inning to break the career hit mark, previously held by CJ Rockhill (1985-1988) at 235. Bullis finished the day with a 1-4 effort and two RBI's, while senior catcher Gerard Haran (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) added to his active career records with his 48th career homerun in the top of the second to put the Lions on the scoreboard and went 3-4 with two runs scored and now has 213 career RBI's. Junior short stop Jeff Toth (Parlin, NJ/Sayerville War Memorial) was 2-5 and was picked off for the first time all season after a perfect 24-24 performance on stolen bases prior to the game.
JHU's Jonas Fester (Dallas, TX) tied the NCAA Division III single-season doubles mark with his 27th double of the year. He finished the game with a 2-5 effort with two RBI's and a pair of runs scored. TCNJ collected 14 hits on the day and stranded 12 base runners but were unable to score the go ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings when they had opportunities.
TCNJ's junior pitcher Bob Buskett (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) took the loss and is now 6-2 for the Lions after three earned runs off seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 3.1 innings of work. Junior Matt Barrett (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) worked 2.2 innings of relief with one earned runs and two hits with a strikeout, while sophomore Eric Gertie (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) worked two hitless innings of relief.
JHU's junior Ryan Kuhlman (Hicksville, NY) collected the win to improve to 9-1 after six plus innings with four earned runs off nine hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks in the win. Junior Ryan Kealy (Ardsley, NY) worked 2.1 innings of five-hit no run relief before sophomore Chez Angeloni (Jenkintown, PA) picked up the save in two thirds of an inning of relief with no hits.
