Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey field hockey team had three players named to the 2008 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-America teams with the two of them landing on the first team.
The sister tandem of senior Kelly Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and sophomore Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) both earned a spot on the Longstreth/NFHCA Division III All-America First Team, while senior Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) was named to the third team.
This marked the second straight year Kelly Mitchell has earned a spot on the first team. Mitchell racked up numerous other honors leading up to this one as she was named the 2008 NJAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in addition to being selected to both then Longstreth/NFHCA South Atlantic and All-NJAC first teams for consecutive years. Mitchell anchored TCNJ's defensive unit that led the NJAC in team goals against average (0.87), fewest goals allowed (17), and shutouts (9).
Leigh Mitchell excelled at the other end of the field for the Lions as she led the team in scoring with 19 goals and 45 points. Those 19 goals tied the forward for third in the NJAC and she also garnered All-NJAC First Team and South Atlantic Region First Team honors. She also ranked among the team leaders with two game-winning goals.
Reuther was named to the third team as she reeled in her first All-America citation. She was previously honored as the 2008 NJAC Midfielder of the Year and being tabbed to both the South Atlantic and All-NJAC first teams. She is a two-time NJAC all-conference selection and helped lead the Lions to their third consecutive NJAC Championship. Reuther finished third in the NJAC in overall assists (11).
This season, the Lions finished with an overall record of 16-3 and advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals.
