Women's track and field remain perfect in NJAC championships

NEW YORK, NY --The College of New Jersey swept to its 13th consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships on February 22 at the New Balance 168th Street Armory, as the Lions took first place in the women's meet with 178 points.

TCNJ has have won every indoor championship since the conference began conducting the meet in 1998.

TCNJ's 178 points on the women's side gave the Lions a 62-point margin over second-place Rowan University (116). TCNJ won eight of the events, claiming titles in the 55 meters, 55 meter hurdles, distance medley relay, 400 meters, 800, meters, 3000 meters, 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays. Richard Stockton College was third (94 points) followed by Ramapo College and New Jersey City which finished tied for fourth at 91 points. Montclair State University was sixth (51 points) with Rutgers-Newark (33 points), Rutgers-Camden (24 points) and Kean University (9 points) rounding out the standings.


The College of New Jersey's Priscilla Senyah (Sayreville, NJ / Sayreville War Memorial) was selected as the Outstanding Female Track Athlete. Senyah broke one of the longest standing records in meet history as she captured the 55 hurdles while also registering an NCAA automatic qualifying time. Senyah ran 8.20 seconds to eclipse Janice Brenner's 1999 record (8.29), a time that will send her to the NCAA Division III Championships in Greencastle, Indiana on March 12-13. Senyah then added her second victory in the 55 meters as she ran an NCAA provisional time of 7.20.

Senior Jianna Spadaccini (Butler, NJ/Butler) won the 400-meter race posting an NCAA provisional time of 57.46. Senior Michelle Wallace (Emerson, NJ/Emerson) crossed the finish line first in the 3000-meter race as she posted an ECAC qualifying time of 10:35.63. Junior Meryl Wimberly (Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck) won the 800-meter event posting a time of 2:14.27, also an NCAA provisional.

For the women, New Jersey City University sophomore La'Shonda Carter (East Orange, NJ / Rahway) was named the Outstanding Female Athlete. Carter won the long jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 5.46 meters before taking the 200 meters with an ECAC time of 25.39. She also ran the anchor leg on the Gothic Knights' winning 4x200 relay team that registered an ECAC qualifying time of 1:42.42.

Outstanding Female Field Athlete honors went to Richard Stockton's Mahogany Mitchell (Atlantic City, NJ / Atlantic City) and Alisha Gray (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) of Rutgers-Newark. Mitchell set a new NJAC meet record in the weight throw as she broke Stephanie Aromando's 2007 mark with a distance of 15.15 meters which was also a qualifying mark for the ECAC Championships. Gray captured the shot put with a best throw of 11.92 meters.

Ramapo College freshman Michelle Favre (Saddle Brook, NJ / Saddle Brook) was named the Women's Rookie of the Year. Favre took top honors in the pole vault as she went 3.71 meters which was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

TCNJ head coach Philip Jennings was selected as the NJAC Coach of the Year for both the men's and women's teams as he led the Lions to their 13th straight title on both sides. . Jennings captures the women's honor for the second straight season.
