Cedar Rapids, IA...The College of New Jersey's Mike Denver (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) remains in All-American contention at the 2010 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship as he alive in the consolation bracket after the opening day of competition on Friday.
The 2010 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships are being held in Cedar Rapids, IA at the U.S. Cellular Center.
Wrestlers who finish in the top eight in their respective weight classes will be recognized as 2010 All-Americans. TCNJ has had at least one All-American each season since they started awarding the honor in 1972, racking up 134 during that time.
Denver started strong at 184 pounds as he rolled to a 13-8 decision over Nate Murren from Ursinus College. Denver, who is seeded fifth, then took on fourth-seeded North Central's Gabe Youel in the quarterfinals and fell 6-3.
On Saturday, he faces sixth-seeded Todd Becker of Wartburg College and a win in that match would secure All-American recognition.
At 133 pounds, sophomore Dan Herr (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) had a tough draw falling to seventh-seeded Nicholas Northern from Cornell College 5-1 in the opening round before falling to second-seed Nathan Fitzenreider from North Central, 13-5. Herr capped his successful season with a record of 31-8.
Sophomore Kyle Packer (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) saw his 10-match winning streak come to a halt in the opening round of the tournament at 165 pounds as he dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to Joey Favia from Stevens Institute of Technology. He then lost to Jordan Schulte of University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, 8-2.
Heavyweight Ed Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) opened the tournament with seventh-seeded Mitch Sander of Coe College and fell in a close 4-1 decision. Broderick came right back to face Wilmington's Adam Salvers in the consolation bracket and lost by fall in 6:37. Broderick boasted a 27-9 record this season.
