Herring was crowned champion of the 165-pound weight class with a perfect 4-0 mark at the 2016 NCAA East Regional Championships. He edged Benjamin Schweiger of Delaware Valley University 9-8 in the semis to seal his national bid and advance to the finals. He faced Colin Navickas of Stevens in the championship match and posted a workman-like 6-3 victory.
