WAYNE , NJ – No. 15 William Paterson (11-2-2, 5-1-1 NJAC) lost its first men's soccer conference match of the season, as The College of New Jersey (7-7-2, 3-4 NJAC) defeated the Pioneers, 3-0, Oct. 18 at Pioneer Soccer Park.
Junior forward
Kevin Luber (Delran, N.J. / Delran) scored book-end goals, his eighth and ninth of the year, while
Chris Nelan (Barrington, N.J. / Haddon Heights) knocked in his fifth goal of the season during the second period to help TCNJ pull away. It was the first time this season that the Pioneers were shut out.
Luber opened the scoring 17:04 into the game, slipping past the Pioneers' backs and curving a right-footed goal into the left corner and away from a diving Dan Peragallo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) . Peragallo made six saves during the contest, two from close-range when it was just a one-score game, in the loss.
William Paterson had a breakaway opportunity to answer during the 19 th minute, but an Ambrogio Pipitone (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) flick shot hit the middle of the crossbar.
During the 63 rd minute, Pipitone again had a one-on-one advantage in the open field with his defender, but as he turned to his left he sent the ball high and over the empty net.
Then, with the Pioneers down 1-0 in the 82 nd minute, Nelan gathered an attempted clear out by the Pioneers' backline, and sent the ball from the right side of the penalty area into the upper-left of the net to give TCNJ a commanding 2-0 advantage.
The Lions finished the scoring with just one second remaining, when a yellow card issued to the Pioneers resulted in a Luber free kick left of center past Peragallo.
The contest marked the 150th career win for TCNJ's head men's soccer coach
George Nazario. Now in his 14th season at TCNJ, Nazario is now 150-95-25 with the Lions.
