Newark, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's soccer team locked up the third seed in the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday as the Lions posted a 4-0 victory at Rutgers University-Newark.
The Lions, the three-time defending champions, will open the tournament on Saturday, November 1 hosting William Paterson University in a 6 p.m. start in Lions' Stadium. The winner of that game will move on to face second-seeded Rowan University on Wednesday, November 5.
The Lions finished the regular season with a mark of 11-5-1, while going 6-2-1 in the conference.
TCNJ struck early scoring a pair of goals in the game's first 20 minutes with Casey Caruso (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) getting the first of those goals 13:41 into the contest. That goal, her sixth of the season, was assisted by Coleen Weber (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) and Allie Schilling (Somerdale, NJ/Triton). The next goal came just under six minutes later when freshman Annie McCarthy (Brick, NJ/Brick) tallied on a helper from Jillian Casey (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern).
In the second half, senior Jamie Kunkel (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored unassisted 1:43 into the new half extending TCNJ's lead to 3-0. The Lions tacked on one more goal as senior Erin Cunliffe (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) notched her team-leading 10th goal of the year on assist from Kunkel.
TCNJ goalie Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) finished with one save as the junior picked up her fifth shutout of the season.
