#14 TCNJ cruises past #27 Stevens, 31-3

Dan Hughes picked up win at 125 pounds for the Lions.


Ewing, NJ...The College of New Jersey wrestling team opened the 2008-09 season in impressive fashion as the Lions posted a 31-3 victory over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday in Packer Hall.

The Lions (1-0) are ranked 14th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, while the Ducks (1-2) entered the match in the 27th spot.

The hosts grabbed the quick lead as sophomore Dan Hughes (Delran, NJ/Delran) with a 17-5 major decision at 125 and junior Mike Jacoutot (Roswell, GA/Lassiter) followed that up with an 8-2 decision at 133. Those two wins staked TCNJ out to a 7-0 lead.

That lead continued to grow for the Lions as senior Bill Tenpenny (Bayville, NJ/High Point) won by fall in 4:21 at 141 and junior Tyler Branham (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny) pulled out a 4-0 decision at 149. Those two wins increased TCNJ's advantage to 16-0.

In the closest match of the night, TCNJ's Dan DiColo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive) and Stevens' Leo Dormann (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway) went into the second tiebreaker period at 157 before DiColo pulled out a 3-1 victory. DiColo earned the win scoring a reversal as the two battled for 11 minutes.

Junior Justin Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) kept the Lions rolling at 165 as he posted a 10-5 decision over Joe Favia (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy). That win gave TCNJ a commanding 22-0 lead.

Third-ranked Greg Osgoodby (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) bumped the Lions' lead to 25-0 at 174 as the senior scored a 4-2 decision over Ryan Dormann (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway).

Sophomore Mike Denver (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) made it eight straight wins for the Lions with a 7-5 decision at 184. TCNJ tacked on another victory at 197 as freshman Ed Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) posted a 6-1 decision.

In the final bout of the dual meet, TCNJ's Adam Koziol (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) and Stevens' James Roarty (Boston, MA/Boston Latin) needed extra time to determine a winner with Roarty winning in a second tiebreaker period, 6-5.

The Lions return to the mat on Sunday, November 16 participating in the Ursinus College Fall Brawl, while the Ducks are in action the previous day at the East Stroudsburg Open.
