Men's Soccer

TCNJ downs NJCU 4-3

Box Score

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's soccer team held off a late-game rally from New Jersey City University to earn a 4-3 victory. Kevin Luber (Delran, NJ/Delran) had a hand in all four goals for the second time in three games as the senior continues his torrid play.

The Lions (5-4-3, 3-1-1) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as senior Anthony Staropoli (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) drilled a one-timer off a Luber corner kick just 6:13 into the match. Freshman goalkeeper Adam Friedman (Chester, NJ/West Morris Mendham) stopped a penalty shot 18 minutes into the game, but the Gothic Knights (6-6-2, 0-4-1) tied the game 1-1 when Awal Ahmed scored at the 25:52 mark. Luber quickly gave TCNJ the lead back when he capitalized on a penalty kick for his team-leading fifth tally of the season.

Before the half came to a close, TCNJ pushed their lead to 3-1. Freshman Trevor Reilly (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) took a feed from Luber and rippled the back of the net to notch the first goal of his collegiate career.

The Lions made it 4-1 just over 12 minutes into the second half when junior Andrew Lampitt (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) headed in a cross from Luber for his first score of the 2009 season. A pair of goals four minutes apart by New Jersey City made the game interesting, and Friedman came up with a big save with just under 10 minutes remaining. However, the Lions defense was stingy, only allowing one the shot in the final 12 minutes of play.

Luber now has five goals and six assists on the season. Four of those goals and four assists have come in the last two NJAC contests. Friedman needed seven saves for this third victory of the season in net. Sophomore Ed Kozic (Raritan,NJ/Immaculata) got off four shots and sophomore Anthony DiPalmo (Somerdale, NJ/Triton Regional) registered two shots, including a head ball that rattled off the crossbar.

TCNJ returns to action this week when they travel to Pomona, NJ to take on Richard Stockton University on Wednesday October 14 at 7 p.m.
