Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's soccer team completed their regular season with a dominating victory over New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent Rutgers University-Newark as the Lions blanked the Scarlet Raiders 7-0.
On senior night, senior
Jillian Casey (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) netted a pair of first-half goals to lead TCNJ (15-2, 7-2 NJAC) to a perfect 6-0 record at home in 2009. It was Casey's sixth and seventh goals of the year, giving her 23 for her career.
The Lions didn't waste any time cementing their 15th win of the season. Just 1:36 into the game,
Brian McDonough (North Arlington, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) sent a cross from the right corner that junior
Casey Caruso (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) volleyed out of the air into the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead.
Just over one minute later, Caruso ripped another shot forcing Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper Kate Renteria (North Bergen, NJ/Cliffside Park) to make a diving save. Casey was in perfect position for the rebound and finished to give the Lions a 2-0 cushion.
Casey struck for her second winner at the 19:48 mark, sending a low shot into the left-hand corner.
The Lions poured it on in the second half finishing five times. Caruso scored her second goal of the game and team-leading 10th of the year. Junior
Brianna Brennan (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross) then blasted a highlight goal from outside the top right corner of the 18-yard line for his score of the season.
Later in the half, freshman
Brenna Rubino (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) took a long pass from
Brittany McGinley (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) and beat the keeper one-on-one for her third goal of the season. Junior
Julianne Delorenzo (Yardville, NJ/Pennington Prep) capped off senior night by following her own shot off the post for her first winner of 2009.
Seniors
Momoko Aoe (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ/Northern Highland) and
Kristina Shemming (Cranbury, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) supplied quality minutes off the bench creating several scoring chances.
Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and
Samantha Iamurri (Logan Township, NJ/Kingsway) combined for TCNJ's 13th shutout of the season.
The Lions open conference tournament play on Tuesday, November 3 at home against an opponent yet to be determined.
