Ewing, NJ... Junior Nikki Migliori (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) scored twice off of direct kicks as The College of New Jersey women's soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament as the Lions shutout Ithaca College 3-0 on Sunday.
The 11th-ranked Lions (18-2-1) advance to the third round of the tournament and will face Johns Hopkins University next weekend at Messiah College. The Blue Jays advanced with a 2-0 win over Hamilton College.
The Bombers cap their season with a 13-5-1 record.
Migliori's first goal came with 13:52 remaining in the half as she blasted a direct kick from 25-yards out into the upper corner of the Ithaca net.
The Lion defender struck again just 1:48 later, this time scoring from the far wing. Migliori lofted a shot that Bomber keeper Jessica Platt (New Marlborough, MA/Monument Mountain) jumped up and got a piece of, but the ball carried to the far post and bounced in making it a 2-0 TCNJ advantage. Those two goals bumped Migliori's season total to three.
In the second half, the hosts made it a 3-0 game as junior Annie McCarthy (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) picked up her fourth of the year off of a feed from Brenna Rubino (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern).
TCNJ then protected that lead thanks to freshman goalie Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) as she made a couple of stellar saves in the final 20 minutes. The first of those came when she leapt up and punched a rising shot from Amanda Callanan (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) up and over the net and then denied Rachael Palladino (Lansing, NY/Lansing) from point-blank range.
Griffith finished with five saves as she posted her 13th shutout of the season. In all, TCNJ has picked up 17 shutouts in 21 games outscoring the opposition 58-5.
Migliori nearly completed her hat trick in taking advantage of another restart as she laced a shot off of the cross bar with 6:30 left on the clock.
Platt picked up three saves for the Bombers, while Alyssa Sotomayor (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) made a pair.
