Mahwah, NJ... Faced with the challenge of playing from behind for the first time this season, The College of New Jersey women's soccer team responded in a hurry scoring three goals in a span of 10:32 as the Lions collected a 3-1 win at Ramapo College on Saturday in their conference opener.
The win kept second-ranked TCNJ undefeated on the season at 7-0 and moved to 1-0 in New Jersey Conference play. The loss knocked the Roadrunners to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Ramapo grabbed a quick lead on the Lions scoring a goal 1:53 into the contest. That goal was the first allowed this season by TCNJ as they started the season with a 541:53 scoreless streak.
Trailing for the first time this season, the Lions quickly responded with a goal 10 minutes later as sophomore Allyson Anderson (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant) tied the contest at one. That goal came 11:58 into the game.
TCNJ then took the lead for good thanks to a pair of quick goals with sophomore Brenna Rubino (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) getting the first of those 19:41 into the game, followed by a goal from junior Annie McCarthy (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) 2:49 later. Anderson picked up an assist on Rubino's goal.
Those three goals were enough for freshman keeper Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) to protect as she made a career-high six saves. The early goal by Ramapo snapped her personal streak of not allowing a goal at 500:07.
The Lions continue NJAC play on Wednesday, September 22 heading to Richard Stockton College to take on the Ospreys in a 7 p.m. start. These two teams met in last year's conference championship and finished in a 0-0 tie, with TCNJ capturing the title via penalty kicks outlasting Richard Stockton, 7-6.
