Elizabethtown, PA... Quick strikes on the offensive end of the field ignited The College of New Jersey women's soccer team as the third-ranked Lions grounded Bridgewater College 7-0 in the opening round of the Blue Jay Classic on Saturday.
TCNJ (2-0) scored three times in a five-minute span in the opening half and followed that up with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart in the second to send the Eagles to their first loss of the season.
Sophomore Allyson Anderson (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant) got TCNJ rolling as she opened the scoring with her first tally of the season 9:58 into the game. Classmate Brenna Rubino (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) made it 2-0 with an assist from Brittany McGinley (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) just under nine minutes later.
The Lions had a big surge late in the half to pull away as Jessica Davila (Middletown, NJ/Middletown) scored twice in 59 seconds and Toni DeMaio (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) added another score 3:15 later for a commanding 5-0 lead.
Freshman Sloan Depiero (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) picked up her first collegiate point with an assist on Davila's second goal.
Rubino scored the only two goals of the second half getting those goals 1:56 apart to complete the hat trick.
Keepers Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and Samantha Iamurri (Logan Twp., NJ/Kingsway) combined on the shutout for the Lions as they each made a save.
TCNJ finish the tournament on Sunday facing University of La Verne at 2 p.m.
