Madison, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's soccer team scored twice in the last 10 minutes of play to stun host FDU-Florham 2-1 on Thursday night.
Freshman
Kevin McCartney (Old Bridge, NJ/St. Joseph's) picked an opportune time to notch his first career goal as he scored in the 86
th minute of the game to give the Lions (4-3-1) a come-from-behind victory.
Troubled by surrendering late-game goals in their last three contests, TCNJ turned the tables against the Devils (3-5). Trailing 1-0 with less than 10 minutes to play, a pair of seniors stepped forward to even the match.
Ed Kozic (Raritan, NJ/Immaculata) came through with a clutch goal off a feed from
Anthony DiPalmo (Somerdale, NJ/Triton Regional) to make it a 1-1 game. It was his second tally of the season.
Just under six minutes later, McCartney delivered the unassisted game-winner and snapped a three-game winless streak for the Lions.
The Devils took a 1-0 lead at the 42:32 mark of the first half when Josh Corpuz converted a penalty kick. FDU had better scoring chances in the opening period, but TCNJ goalkeeper
Aaron Utman (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) made four stops on six shot attempts. The Lions did get off five shots, but only junior
Taylor Gregory (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) put his attempt on net.
Junior
Adam Friedman (Chester, NJ/West Morris Mendham) entered the game in the second half to register his first win of the season. He made three saves to hold the FDU offense scoreless in the second period.
The thrilling victory should provide the Lions with positive momentum as they enter their biggest game of the season to date, taking on New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Montclair State University on Saturday. TCNJ hosts the Red Hawks (5-1-2) at 5:30 p.m. in Lions' Stadium.
