Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey women's soccer team made its final non-conference game of the season a very successful one as the Lions posted a 3-0 shutout over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday.
The win elevated 18
th-ranked TCNJ to 13-1-1 on the season, while the Ducks slid to 9-5.
The Lions used the long ball to open the scoring as
Jordan Downs (Brick, NJ/Brick) hooked a direct kick from the far wing in for her second goal of the season. That goal came 13:21 into the game.
TCNJ then turned to its speed to increase the margin to 2-0 and keeper
Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) boomed the ball into the Stevens end of the field where
Katie Lindacher (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) ran onto it on the far side. After eluding a defending, she placed a perfect centering pass past just out the reach of a diving Stevens goalie and senior
Katie Landrigan (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) was there to deposit the ball into an empty net.
Lindacher then bumped that lead to 3-0 only 2:58 into the second half poking a loose ball following a corner kick.
The Lions had a great chance to make it 4-0 when they were awarded a penalty kick, but Duck keeper
Michelle Murphy (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) made the save and then covered the rebound. Murphy finished the game with seven saves.
Griffith earned her seventh shutout of the season and 13
th victory.
TCNJ returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday, October 20 heading to New Jersey City University to face the Gothic Knights at 1 p.m. The Ducks are also home on Saturday hosting St. John Fisher at noon.
