Hoboken, NJ… The College of New Jersey opened the dual meet portion of its schedule with a win over a ranked opponent as the Lions collected a 31-11 triumph at Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday.
The win put 26
th-ranked TCNJ at 1-0 on the year, while the 30
th-ranked Ducks fell to 0-1.
TCNJ grabbed control of the match early winning the opening three weight classes as
Kevin Churchill (Newton, NJ/Newton) received a forfeit at 125 and
Steve Godine (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) pinned his opponent at 133 in 5:41. That lead grew to 15-0 following the 141-pound weight class as
Steve Schneider (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) posted an 8-4 win.
The Ducks came right back rattling off three wins of their own closing the gap to 15-11, but TCNJ responded with another run closing out the match with four straight wins. Junior
Zach Zotollo (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) started things at 174 with 19-4 technical fall
and Brian Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) won by major decision (11-1) at 184.
Nathaniel Leer (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) added another major decision at 197 (23-11), before
Jeff Furbish (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) closed things out with a 3-1 win at heavyweight.
TCNJ returns to the mat this weekend at the East Stroudsburg Open.
