Ewing, NJ … A group of former teammates, coaches, and members of the swimming community have organized an event titled, 1500 Meters For Mike, a one-mile open water swim in Belmar, NJ on the morning of September 22^nd. The event is being held in support of Mike Heaney '09, who sustained serious injuries from a bicycle accident this past spring.
 
Heaney was a student-athlete for The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team from the 2005-06 through 2008-09 seasons. The Bishop Eustace graduate was a tri-captain for the Lions during his senior season, specializing in the backstroke and individual medley events.
 
The primary purposes for the event are to assist Michael's family with the cost of medical care and to bring his people together. The accident has left Heaney in an unconscious state and in a full-care rehabilitation facility at Willow Creek located in Somerset, NJ.
 
Former TCNJ swimmer and assistant coach Daniel Schupsky has joined Lions' head coach Brian Bishop, swimming alum Steven Swenson and many others to inform TCNJ's extended family and swimming community. Schupsky drafted a letter that to create awareness of 1500 Meters For Mike, but also to characterize Heaney and what makes him one-of-a-kind.
 
“Do you remember that precocious, borderline obnoxious freshman who ruffled feathers and turned heads from your very first meeting of the pre-season?  This was the guy who was loud, proud, and who had the ability to back up the attitude he threw around that day.  If you do, then you have very likely coached a swimmer similar to our own Michael Heaney.”
