Collegeville, PA… The College of New Jersey wrestling team ran into some tough competition as the Lions opened the 2013 portion of the schedule participating in the North/South Duals hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday.
TCNJ (3-3) entered the tournament ranked 20
th in the latest Division III poll and took on 21
st-ranked York (PA) College in the first of four dual meets on the day. The Spartans won the final three weight classes to pull out a 21-20 victory. The Lions bounced right back with a 28-12 win over McDaniel College, before facing a pair of top-10 teams to round out the day. The first of those was a 31-6 setback against ninth-ranked Ithaca College and final was a 24-7 loss at the hands of fourth-ranked SUNY Cortland.
Senior
John Darling (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) had a perfect day for the Lions winning all four of his matches. He entered the day ranked fourth nationally at 165 pounds and improved his season record to 16-3.
Junior
Kevin Churchill (Newton, NJ/Newton) picked up three wins on the day at 125 pounds,
while Dan Herr (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) and
Antonio Mancella (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) each had a pair.
The Lions will participate in another dual-meet tournament next weekend heading to the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College. The two-day event is set for Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12.
