Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback in double overtime to Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (7-3-2, 2-2-1 NJAC) trailed most of the game and tied the match in the 76th minute of play, but Hubert Dul picked up a loose ball and scored the game-winner just 1:56 into the second extra period. The Scarlet Raiders moved to 10-3 with the victory and 2-2 in the NJAC.

Senior Kevin Shaw (Brookside, NJ/West Morris Mendham) netted his 14th goal of the season. He took a feed from sophomore Matt Taylor (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) to even the score and ultimately force overtime.

The Scarlet Raiders took control of the game in the opening, pumping five shots on net. They cashed in during the 16th minute when Patrick Dawidczyk took a pass from Allentown High School graduate Anthony DeRisi and knocked in his third goal of the season.

The Lions came out aggressive in the second half and nearly tied it up in the 54th minute. Freshman Nick Costelloe (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) found himself with a scoring chance and ripped that clanked off the post as TCNJ remained a goal down.

In the 72nd minute, Rutgers-Newark nearly stretched their lead to two goals when Brian Barrera hit a shot on goal that senior goalkeeper Aaron Utman (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) stopped. Dal collected the rebound and fired another shot, but Utman came up with another save to keep it a one-goal deficit.

Just four minutes later, Taylor found Shaw free with and connected with a through ball. He nestled a shot into the left corner to tie the game 1-1.

The Lions got off a few shots in overtime and finished with 19 in the game, but Dal ended the conference match with his first goal of the season.

Utman finished with seven saves for TCNJ. Mike Broomall finished with five stops for the Scarlet Raiders.

TCNJ stays on the road when they visit Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match. They return home on Saturday, October 12 to host NJAC opponent William Paterson University in TCNJ's Soccer Complex at 1 p.m.
