Ewing, NJ… Freshman
Christine Levering (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) scored the biggest goal of her budding soccer career at The College of New Jersey as she netted the "Golden Goal" 13 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Lions to a 2-1 victory over Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday.
Â
The 13
th-ranked Lions improved to 11-1 on the season, while the Blue Jays fell from the ranks of the undefeated, dropping to 10-1.
Â
TCNJ had the opening kick-off in the second overtime and the Lions put a long shot into the Blue Jay half of the field that a defender wasn't able to control. Levering quickly gained control of the ball and ripped a shot from 20-yards out that found its way into the upper corner of the net for the victory. That goal was her team-leading eighth of the season, with half of those being game winners.
Â
The Lions also had the better of the chances in the first overtime with senior
Katie Lindacher (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) getting the best one. The forward cut in from the near side and unleashed a rising shot that Blue Jay keeper
Kelly Leddy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) tipped off the cross bar.
Â
TCNJ used an early second-half goal to erase a 1-0 deficit with junior
Korrie Harkins (Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) getting that goal. It came when
Leigh Applestein (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) sent a shot in from the near wing that Heddy made the initial save, but Harkins was there to clean up the rebound for her first goal of the season.
Â
The game was scoreless for nearly 44 minutes in the first half with TCNJ's defense coming up with two stellar plays. The first came when senior defender
Lauren Giles (Deptford, NJ/Deptford Twp.) swooped in along the goal line and knocked out a sure goal by Blue Jay forward
Kelly Baker (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) with 31:10 left in the period. Baker was denied again three minutes later when TCNJ keeper
Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) made a diving save on a hard shot.
Â
Johns Hopkins did break through with a goal with only 1:08 left before the break as
Katie McEneaney (Glastonbury, CT/Miss Porter's) pushed a pass through to forward
Hannah Kronick (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), who sent a shot into the lower corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. That goal was her 54
th career goal as she is now one shy of the Johns Hopkins' record for career goals.
Â
Griffith finished with five saves, while Heddy collected nine.
Â
TCNJ has the weekend off and doesn't return to the field until Wednesday, October 16 with a road contest at William Paterson University, while the Blue Jays travel to Swarthmore College this Saturday.
