TCNJ grounds Falcons in season finale

Eighth-ranked Dylan Thorsen won by decision at 141.
Ewing, NJ… Wrestling on their home mat for the final time, The College of New Jersey capped off the regular season with a bang dropping visiting Messiah College
 
The 16th-ranked Lions finished the season with a dual-meet record of 12-7, while 19th-ranked Messiah dropped to 12-7.
 
The match was tight throughout with eight of the 10 matches being decided by decision.
 
Prior to the match, TCNJ honored its seven seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program. Recognized in a brief ceremony were Dan Brill (Livingston, NJ/Livingston), Tom Callahan (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley), John Darling (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown), Steve Godine (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park), Dan Herr (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls), Michael Kiley (Howell, NJ/Brick Memorial), and KC Murphy (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley).
 
Herr helped the Lions overcome and early three-point deficit, by recording a pin at 133 pounds in 3:18. Eighth-ranked Dylan Thorsen (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere) followed with 3-1 decision at 141 and Mike Shaughnessy (Farmingdale, NJ/Howell) made it three straight victories for the Lions at 149. Shaughnessy won his bout by the score of 9-6 and increased TCNJ's advantage to 12-3.
 
Freshman Antonio Mancella (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) kept things rolling for the Lions at 157 collecting a 6-4 win. Darling, who is ranked fourth nationally at 165 pounds, won his match by the count of 5-0. That win capped a string of five straight victories by the hosts.
 
The Falcons posted a win at 174, setting up one of the more anticipated matches of the day. Third-ranked Brian Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) of TCNJ faced sixth-ranked John Thomson (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) and match was as close as the rankings with Broderick slipping past Thomson with a 3-2 decision.
 
Messiah garnered wins in the final two weight classes to make the final 21-13.
 
TCNJ is idle until March 2 when they compete at the NCAA Division III East Regionals hosted by Gettysburg College.
