Ewing, NJ… The College and New Jersey and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute each came away with wins in the opening round of TCNJ's Classic as the 2013 women's soccer season opened on Friday.

The host 23rd-ranked Lions scored a late goal to slip past 13th-ranked William Smith College 2-1, while RPI pulled away from Stevens Institute of Technology for a 5-1 victory.

RPI will square off against the host Lions tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The Ducks will take on William Smith at 2 p.m. on the final day of the tournament.

#23 TCNJ 2, #13 William Smith 1
Senior Katie Lindacher (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) scored the game-winning goal with 12:17 left in the game. The senior fought off a Heron defender and then slipped past the diving keeper, before touching the ball into the net for the deciding goal.

That goal broke a 1-1 tie after William Smith knotted the score on a penalty kick with 23:05 left on the clock in the second half. TCNJ was called for a four inside the penalty area and junior MaryClaire Pelletier cashed in on the penalty kick making it a 1-1 game.

The Herons came within inches of taking the lead just under five minutes later, but Maddie Devereaux's shot from the near side hit the post.

That kept the score 1-1 until the latter stages of the game setting up Lindacher's herorics.

The Lions opened the scoring later in the opening half on a restart when junior defender Jordan Downs (Brick, NJ/Brick) dropped inside the goalie crease, where junior Leigh Applestein (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) used her body to net the initial goal of the year.

Senior Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) notched the win for the hosts, making four saves.

William Smith keeper Chelsea Dunay finished with four saves.

RPI 5, Stevens 1 (Box Score)
RPI opened its season in dominant fashion as they defeated Stevens in their opening game of TCNJ's Classic.

Taylor Korytko led the way with a pair of second half goals, while Cori Winslow and Giana Abballe each contributed a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Alex Scholz needed just two saves to register her first win of the season.

Just three minutes into the contest, the Engineers struck with their first goal of the season. Abballe took the ball down the left side and hit a cross in the box. Winslow collected it in front and quickly slipped a shot past the keeper to take a 1-0 lead.

With just 26 minutes remaining in the opening half, Winslow returned the favor as she sent a ground pass from the right corner. Sara Rothschild re-directed a one-timer just under the crossbar to give RPI a two-goal advantage.

The Ducks got on the board when Gabby Mathelier gathered a loose ball at the left corner of the box. She shifted right past a defender and ripped a shot passed the goalie to close the gap to 2-1 with 9:55 remaining in the first half.

RPI took advantage of corner kicks to stretch the lead to 4-1 early in the second half. Korytko rushed the net on a corner kick from Alex Shaw to knock in a tally at the 37:08 mark. Two minutes later, Abballe used the side of her foot to drill a shot from left corner of a ground pass from Shaw.

A third tally off a corner closed out the scoring for the Engineers. Korytko netted her second goal of the game off a cross from Shelby Stromerson at the 66:30 mark.
