Box Score

Ewing, NJ … Freshman Sean Etheridge (Oakland, NJ/Ramapo) scored with 3:12 remaining in the first overtime as The College of New Jersey men's soccer defeated York College of New York 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in TCNJ's Soccer Complex.

Etheridge registered his fourth goal of the season as he blasted a shot that was initially stopped by goalkeeper Shady Mohamed, but the ball trickled over the goal line as the Lions (4-1-1) broke into celebration. The tally staved off another potential frustrating outcome as TCNJ surrendered a game-tying goal in the final minutes of regulation for the second straight match. York's Oluwaseun Ogundele converted a penalty kick with 4:25 remaining to send the game to extra periods.

Fellow rookie Nick Costelloe (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) factored into the first two goals, serving up an assist on the first and scoring the second. Senior Kevin Shaw (Brookside, NJ/West Morris Mendham) continued to produce, netting his eighth goal of the season. Sophomore Dan McMillan (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) assisted on Costelloe's goal.

Shaw knocked in his eighth goal of the season at the 7:58 mark when he took a long feed from Costelloe. He raced past the defense and slotted a left-footed shot into the right corner. It was the third time this season that Shaw scored a goal in the opening ten minutes of play.

Senior goalkeeper Aaron Utman (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) came up with a clutch save late in the opening period to maintain the Lions' advantage. Cardinal Michael Delgado struck a great volley that was destined to duck under the crossbar, but Utman punched it clear to keep York scoreless. He finished the game with a pair of saves.

Just 18 seconds into the second half, McMillan served a cross from the endline and Costelloe caught the first-timer square to give TCNJ a two-goal advantage. They continued to pressure York defense, but Mohamed played extremely well in the second half to keep their hopes alive.

The Cardinals made it more than just hope when they cut the lead in half at the 75:48 mark. Junior Rohan Burrell re-directed a cross from Ogundele into the top of the net to make it a 2-1 game. Ogundele was then taken down in the box with just over four minutes to play, and rippled the back of the net off a PK for the equalizer.

In the first overtime period, Etheridge got loose on the right side and capitalized on his lone shot of the game to give TCNJ its fourth win in six games.

Sophomore Maciej Libucha (Woodland Park, NJ/Passiac Valley) recorded his first victory of the season in goal, while Mohamed finished with eight saves.

The Lions continue their non-conference schedule with a visit to FDU-Florham this coming Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
