Box Score
Mahwah, NJ … Junior
Kevin McCartney (Old Bridge, NJ/St. Joseph's) scored off a direct kick just 2:25 into the first overtime as The College of New Jersey men's soccer team netted a 1-0 victory over Ramapo College in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener.
McCartney bent a shot around the wall and into the upper 90 of the net from just inside 25 yards to break a scoreless tie and give the Lions (6-1-1, 1-0 NJAC)) their sixth win of the season. It was the only shot in overtime and the first goal of the season for the junior midfielder. The Roadrunners fell to 3-3 and 0-1 in the conference.
Senior goalkeeper
Aaron Utman (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) made six saves to collect the shutout and his fifth win of the season for TCNJ. Ramapo keeper
Steve Monaghan made one stop in the game.
Play reflected the score throughout 90 minutes of regulation. Utman was forced to make three saves in the opening 12 minutes as the Roadrunners created some chances. The Lions engineered a scoring opportunity when sophomore
Greg Perri (Florence, NJ/Florence) put a headball on net off a corner from freshman
Nick Costelloe (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp), but Monaghan was there to make the stop.
Ramapo held a 14-12 advantage in shots, while TCNJ amassed nine corner kicks to just one for the Roadrunnners. The overtime victory is the second this season for the Lions. They defeated York College (NY) last Saturday in OT.
TCNJ has not been shut out this season and kept that streak alive thanks to McCartney's heroics in overtime.
