Box Score Geneva, NY... Freshman
Jessica Goldman (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) scored five minutes into the second overtime period lifting The College of New Jersey women's soccer to a thrilling 2-1 victory over William Smith College in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.
Â
The Lions (17-2-1) now advance to the tournament's third round and will square off against the winner of the Misericordia vs. Brandeis game, which takes place at 5 p.m. this evening at Misericordia.
Â
The game-winning goal by Goldman completed a stunning turnaround as sophomore
Christine Levering (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) tied the game with just 6:30 remaining in regulation. With TCNJ on the brink of being eliminated by the defending national champion on their home turf, the Lions dug deep and came up clutch.
Â
The loss eliminated the Herons from the NCAA tournament. They finish their season with a 16-3-1 overall record. The victory by the Lions also avenged their season-ending defeat to William Smith last year on that same field.
Â
The Herons gained a 1-0 advantage in the first half. At the 28:40 mark of the game, they were awarded a penalty kick off a foul in the box.
Brenna Kincaid buried the attempt into the upper left-hand corner to give William Smith a 1-0 lead.
Â
TCNJ pressured the Heron defense with five shots in the half, including three on goal. William Smith goalkeeper Hannah Fricke was there to make each stop.
Â
Play was relatively even throughout the second half. The Herons made a push to increase their lead, and in the 81
st minute, struck the post with a shot by
Krista Longo. They took eight shots in the half, but Lions' senior goalkeeper
Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) stopped all three shots on goal.
Â
TCNJ continue to push and finally broke through at the 83:35 mark. Levering hit a shot from right side that beat the goalkeeper high and the match was tied at one. It was the 15
th goal of the season for Levering.
Â
In overtime, TCNJ controlled the majority of play. Fricke was forced to make a save on a shot by freshman
Elizabeth Thoresen (Colts, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) in the 97
th minute after two previous shots that went wide. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first 10-minute period, so the game went to a second overtime.
Â
Just under five minutes into the second overtime period, Goldman took a corner kick from the left side. The ball deflected back outside the box towards Goldman. She collected and curled a shot into the near-post corner to end the game and send TCNJ to the next from of the NCAA tournament.
Â
TCNJ extended its unbeaten streak to ten games (9-0-1) and have only allowed two goals in that span. They will now await word of their next opponent and where those games will be held.
