Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rowan pulls away from TCNJ

Glassboro, NJ... Rowan University kept its undefeated record intact as the Profs collected a 79-61 win over The College of New Jersey women's basketball team on Wednesday.

The Profs improved to 8-0 and 5-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while the Lions fell to 3-5 and 1-4 in the conference.

The teams were close in the opening part of the period as they were tied three times. The last of those ties came at 17-17 when the Profs were at the beginning of an 11-0 run that saw them move ahead 25-17.

The Lions quickly trimmed five points off of that deficit when freshman Charlotte Schum (East Hanover, NJ/Morris Catholic) made a jumper and sophomore Taryn Corrigan (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) knocked down a 3-pointer. That burst then made it a 25-22 game.

Rowan took its biggest lead of the period at 39-29, but senior Jessica Goldbach (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) made a lay-up with two seconds left to make it an eight-point difference at the break.

The Profs opened the second half scoring the initial six points, extending their lead to 45-31. TCNJ countered with a modest 6-2 run that saw Schum, junior Christina Merlin (North Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) and senior Kylie O'Donnell (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) each score buckets. That closed the margin back to single digits at 46-37.

That was as close as the Lions would get the rest of the way as the Profs scored eight straight points to build their lead to 54-37.

The Lions continued to fight as they scored the final five points of the game with junior Angelica Esposito (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) making two free throws and Merlin adding three more to finish the game with a career-high 16 points. She also added six rebounds.

Esposito had a nice game with 13 points and a game-high eight assists, against only one turnover. Schum had the best offensive game of her young career with eight points.

The Lions have one final home game this semester when they host Delaware Valley College on Wednesday, December 17 at 6 p.m. in Packer Hall.
