Box Score Ewing, NJ … Three players registered their first collegiate goals as The College of New Jersey men's soccer team defeated Elizabethtown College 4-1 for their first win of the 2014 season.
Â
The Lions (1-1) scored the final three goals of the contest to even their record at the Gilmore Alumni Classic hosted by Rowan University. Senior
Jason O'Donnell (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and juniors
Jordan Kayal (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) and
Joe Martinico (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) all tallied goals in the win.
Â
TCNJ needed an early spark after suffering a tough loss yesterday and then taking on a formidable opponent in Elizabethtown. They got one from O'Donnell as he headed home a winner off a cross from
Dan McMillan (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) just over five minutes into the game.
Â
The 1-0 cushion remained intact until the final minutes of the opening period. Blue Jay midfielder
Brent Batory scored off a serve from
Martin Fevre to tie the match, 1-1. But that was short-lived as the Lions were the benefactor of an own goal by the Elizabethtown defense with less than a minute left in the period.
Â
TCNJ kept the momentum in the second half and stretched its lead to 3-1 when Kayal found the back of the net off an assist from senior
Kevin McCartney (Old Bridge, NJ/St. Joseph's). McCartney tied for the team lead in assists last season with five.
Â
The game was put on ice when Martinico put away a penalty kick in the 83
rd minute.
Â
The Lions outshot the Blue Jays 14-12. Junior goalkeeper
Maciej Libucha (Woodland Park, NJ/Passaic Valley) made six saves for his first victory of the season and eighth of his career.
Â
TCNJ will enjoy a couple days of rest before visiting York College (NY) on Tuesday, September 2 at 3 p.m.
