Box Score Madison, NJ … Playing a man down for nearly 80 minutes, The College of New Jersey men's soccer team battled Drew University to a scoreless tie in wet conditions on Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
Â
The Lions (3-3-1) showed great resolve and endurance in playing the Rangers (2-1-3) to a draw. They were held scoreless for the second consecutive game, but TCNJ's defensive play was outstanding in keeping an offense with a man advantage off the scoreboard through regulation and two overtime periods.
Â
The biggest play of the game occurred in in the 32
nd minute. TCNJ goalkeeper
Maciej Libucha (Woodland Park, NJ/Passaic Valley) came outside of the box to make a play, and in the action that ensued, was called for an intentional handball just outside the 18-yard line. The judgment drew some question, but the official ruled the handball stopped a potential goal and subsequently red carded Libucha on the play. He was replaced by goalkeeper
Jake Nesteruk (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) and the Lions were forced to play down a man for the remainder of the contest.
Â
Following an even first half, Drew had the better of play in the second half, particularly in the final 15 minutes. With just over seven minutes remaining, Ranger midfielder
Cole Leckburg (Great Meadows, NJ/Hackettstown) ripped a shot from the top left side of the box that was destined for the top right corner. Nesteruk leapt up, extended and grabbed the shot out of the air for the save. Leckberg had another scoring chance in the final seconds of regulation, but his shot sailed wide right of the far post.
Â
The Rangers controlled the majority of the first overtime, but play was even during the second extra period. For the game, Drew held a 13-6 advantage in shots. Nesteruk finished with a two saves and Libucha had one for the combined shutout. Ranger keeper
Michael Reyes (Delran, NJ/Delran) needed just one save for the shutout.
Â
The game against the Lions was the fourth New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up for Drew this fall. Earlier this season, they dropped a 2-1 decision to Rutgers University-Camden, tied Kean Univesity 0-0 and defeated New Jersey City University 2-1 in overtime.
