TCNJ handles Centenary, 26-12

Freshman James Goldschmidt earned a win by major decision at 133.
Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey wrestling team posted its fourth straight victory as the Lions never trailed in a 26-12 victory against Centenary College on Friday.

The team's latest win elevated their record to 10-4 on the season.

Prior to the match, there was a brief ceremony commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1985 NCAA Division III National Championship team. That team boasted two individual champions, four All-Americans and eight national qualifiers.

The Lions received a forfeit at 125 to start the match, freshman James Goldschmidt (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) won by a 12-4 major decision at 133. Those two wins put the hosts out in front, 10-0.

The Cyclones got a win back with a decision at 141, but junior Dylan Thorsen (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere) got TCNJ another victory as he scored a late takedown to score a 12-3 major decision.

Centenary picked up three team points with a win at 157, closing the difference to 14-6.

Freshman Kellen Whitney (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) picked up an escape in the second period and that was the only point of the match as he extended TCNJ's lead to 17-6.

Senior Zach Zotollo (Paramus, NJ/Paramus), the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, remained undefeated on the season (12-0) with a takedown with 11 seconds left in the third period to pull out a 3-2 decision.

Sophomore Dan Wojtaszek (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was awarded a forfeit at 184 as TCNJ's ballooned to 26-6.

The Cyclones closed the gap in the final two bouts with a pair of decisions, making the final 26-12.

TCNJ is idle until January 31 when they host the Metro/New England Duals in the Student Recreation Center. The Lions will wrestle three matches, taking on 19th-ranked Williams College, 16th-ranked Roger Williams University and Bridgewater State University.
