Lions fall in OT of NJAC title game

Glassboro, NJ... Rowan University's Cathryn McCarry scored early in the first overtime to lift the Profs to a 2-1 win over The College of New Jersey women's soccer team on Friday night in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships.
 
The win allowed top-seeded and host Rowan (13-2-2) to claim their first conference title since 2008, as well as the conference's automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Division III Tournament.
 
With the loss, the second-seeded Lions fell to 12-3-4 on the season as they eye an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The selection of the tournament field will be broadcast on www.ncaa.com on Monday, November 9 at 1 p.m.
 
The deciding goal came 3:32 into the first 10-minute overtime period as McCarry put in a shot from by left side off of an assist from Maxime New.
 
The Lions opened the scoring with the lone goal in the opening half as junior Marissa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, NY/Pearl River) was successful on a penalty kick. That goal came an even 10 minutes before the break.
 
The got the equalizer midway through the second frame when Sarah Rosenbach scored off an assist from Megan McKinley. That goal tied the game with 24:39 left in regulation.
 
TCNJ did get a couple of chances to take the lead in the final 10 minutes as senior Taylor Lusardi (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and sophomore Elizabeth Thoresen (Coolts Neck, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) each got shots off at the Rowan net, but were unable to find the back of the net setting up overtime.
 
Senior keeper Jessica Weeder (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) had a pair of saves for the Lions.
 
For Rowan, Shelby Money recorded six saves to pick up the win.
