Lake Myrtle, Fla … .The College of New Jersey baseball team suffered a 14-6 defeat at the hands of The College at Brockport on Tuesday afternoon in Lake Myrtle, Fla.
Â
The Golden Eagles (6-3) tallied the first 11 runs of the game and never looked back to capture their sixth victory of the season. They pushed three across in the first, three in the second and five in the third to quiet the Lions' dugout from the outset. TCNJ dropped to 2-3 overall as free passes and some shaky defensive play made play too accommodating for Brockport.
Â
Trailing by a wide margin in the fourth, the Lions got on the board when senior
Anthony Cocuzza (Absecon, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) singled to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a fielder's choice and scored on a base hit to right-center off the bat of
Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough). A run-scoring single by
Michael Murray (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) plated Roberts to the cut the deficit to 11-2.
Â
The Lions threatened in the fifth when they loaded the bases with nobody out. Sophomore
Ben Varone (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) drew a walk, rookie
Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) singled to left and Cocuzza was hit by a pitch. But
Nick Pontari came on in relief and got a 1-2-3 double play. Roberts then lined out to right field to end the inning.
Â
TCNJ continued to compete and a two-run single by Cocuzza cut the deficit to 11-5. Murray singled earlier in the inning and
Matt Facas (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) doubled to right-center. Both came around to score.
Â
The Golden Eagles stopped the bleeding in the eighth. After being held scoreless for four consecutive frames, they tacked on three more runs in the top of the eighth. TCNJ came back with another run in the bottom of the inning, but that was all they could manufacture.
Â
Roberts finished with three hits in the game and has hit safely in all four games he has played. Cocuzza had a pair of hit and has registered at least one hit in five straight contests. Facas, Murray and Shindler also collected two hits in the game.
Â
Freshman
Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) got his first collegiate outing under his belt. Junior
Joe DiLorenzo (West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) came on in relief and settled in his final two inning of work. Freshman
Chris Barcas (Wall, NJ/Wall) threw two innings and senior
Benito Gonzalez (Perth Amboy, NJ/Princeton) worked a perfect ninth inning that included a strikeout.
Â
TCNJ will return to the diamond tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. when they take on Benedictine College in Lake Myrtle.
