TCNJ splits with Washington & Jefferson

Lake Myrtle, Fla … .The College of New Jersey baseball team split a double header with Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday in Lake Myrtle, Fla.

After winning their third consecutive game with a 7-5 victory, the Lions ran into a hot pitcher and fell 2-0. TCNJ is now 5-4 overall this season.

Game 1: TCNJ 7  Washington & Jefferson 5

Junior Steven Volpe (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) notched his first win of the season and sophomore Eric Teesdale (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) recorded his first career save as TCNJ defeated W&J 7-5 in the opener.

The offense scored early and often in the seven-inning affair, as they plated two runs in the third and five in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. A ground out off the bat of Mark Mari (Bayonne, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and a single by shortstop Anthony Cocuzza (Absecon, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) put the Lions on top 2-0.

In the fourth, TCNJ erupted for five runs, all coming with two outs. Senior Josh Limon (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) had the big blow, belting a two-run double to right-center field. The two-bagger was the 99th hit of his career.

Volpe was cruising through his second outing of the season. He surrendered just one run in the first five frames, but the Presidents heated up in the sixth. Their first four batters reached base and scored to close the gap to two runs.

Teesdale spelled Volpe to get the final out in the sixth. He retired the side in order in the seventh, striking out the final batter looking to secure the save.

TCNJ compiled a gaudy 14 hits in the contest. Junior Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored. Mari, Cocuzza, Limon and sophomore Ben Varone (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each had two hits. The Lions were also perfect on defense, playing errorless baseball in the win.

Game 2: W&J 2  TCNJ 0

After healthy offensive production in the opener, the Lions were blanked in the nightcap as President pitcher Riley Groves struck out eight en route to his third victory of the season.

TCNJ was hitless through the first three innings before Garen Turner (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) singled up the middle with two outs in the fourth. TCNJ had its biggest threat with runners at the corners in the sixth, but Groves induced a fielder's choice to escape the inning unscathed.

Junior right-hander Evan Edelman (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) was the tough-luck loser for the Lions. He limited W&J to just six hits over seven innings and struck out three. Edelman was touched for a run in the first and an unearned run in the fifth. Despite his solid effort, he dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Sophomore CJ Gearhart (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) chalked up two hits in his first start. He singled to center and right field, going 2-for-3 in the game. Cocuzza, Roberts and Varone also had hits for TCNJ.

The Lions play their final game of the trip before heading up north tomorrow at 12:30. They take the field against University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in Lake Myrtle, Fla.
