Haverford, Pa … Junior
Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) belted three home runs to lift The College of New Jersey to a 10-1 victory over Haverford College 9-1 on Friday afternoon.
Â
Roberts hit a two-run shot in the third, a three-run bomb in the fourth and a titanic solo shot in the ninth to cap an incredible performance. The right fielder drove in six runs and either set or matched a program record by hitting three homers in a single game.
Â
"It's an awesome feeling," said Roberts after the game. "I can't even describe it right now. After hitting the second home run, I was just looking to see the ball long and hit to the opposite field. But in the last at bat, the pitch came down and in and I got the barrel on it and it just went. I've never had a multi-home run game in my life, so I've never experienced something like today. It's tough to describe."
Roberts had one career home run entering the game in 202 lifetime at bats. He went deep as a freshman on April 2 at Widener University. Roberts hit three in four official at bats in the game.
Â
Junior
Matt Facas (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) also went deep, while freshman
Joe Cirillo (Fairfield, NJ/Depaul Catholic) pitched seven innings and struck out five to notch his second win of the season. Â The Lions won their second straight contest and improved to 7-5 on the season.
Â
The Lions scored a pair of two-out runs in the first.
Anthony Cocuzza (Absecon, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) walked and moved to second when junior
Garen Turner (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) reached on an error. Roberts was issued a free pass before senior
Josh Limon (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) singled to center to score Cocuzza and Turner.
Â
Haverford responded in the bottom of the frame.
Casey Fox lined a single to score
Spence Sohmer (doubled) and the Fords cut the deficit in half.
Â
After a scoreless second, Cocuzza drew his second walk of the game, and with two away, Roberts hit a line shot to right-center field for his first home of the day. That put TCNJ up 4-1.
Â
In the fourth,
Patrick Anderson (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) doubled, stole third and raced home on a wild pitch. With two on and two out in the inning, Roberts drilled his second round-tripper of the afternoon over the scoreboard in right to make it an 8-1 score.
Â
Facas led off the fifth inning and deposited his first collegiate home run over the right-field fence and off the scoreboard.
Â
On the mound, Cirillo tossed six scoreless innings after being touched for the single run in the first. He limited the Fords to seven hits and walked none. Cirillo has allowed just one run in 15 innings of work with the Lions through his first two starts.
Â
In the ninth, Roberts worked a full count on pitcher
Clay Bloszies. He fouled off a pitch and then crushed his third home run of the game that traveled far over the scoreboard. Roberts is now hitting .452 this season.
Â
Senior
Benito Gonzalez (Perth Amboy, NJ/Princeton) pitched the final two innings for TCNJ. He surrendered just two hits and struck out one to secure the win.
Â
Limon and Facas finished with two hits in the game. Senior
Michael Murray (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) also collected a pair of hits, while junior
John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills) stole three bases.
Â
TCNJ opens New Jersey Athletic Conference tomorrow when they take Kean University in a double header at George Ackerman Park. First pitch is slated for 11:30 a.m.
