Tournament ResultsWilliamsport, Pa … Three decisive victories on the mats made it a banner afternoon for The College of New Jersey wrestling team on opening day of the Budd Whitehill National Dual hosted by Lycoming College.
Â
The Lions stretched their dual meet streak to 10 matches against no losses this season as they toppled Rochester Institute of Technology, Thiel College, and Wesleyan College on Friday. TCNJ advances to the championship round, facing Williams College tomorrow in the semifinal match at 10:30 a.m. York College (Pa) and Messiah College will square off in the other semifinal dual.
Â
On the day, TCNJ dominated its competition by winning 25 of 30 bouts. They registered six pins, a technical fall, and four major decisions. Back-to-back pins by senior
Doug Hamann (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) and sophomore
Kyle Lynch (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) punctuated a resounding 36-6 victory over RIT in the opening match. Hamann, who is ranked sixth in his weight class in the latest NWCA poll, won by fall in just 25 seconds at 174, while Lynch ended his bout at 1:42 of the first period. The Lions (8-0) won their first eight bouts and the ninth by forfeit to claim their eight straight dual meet.
Â
Against Thiel, the Lions (9-0) raced to a 15-0 lead after three weight classes. Freshman
Luis Rivera (Landsville, NJ/Buena) won by a major decision (10-0) at 125, and senior
Jimmy Gill (Smithville, NJ/St. John the Baptist) followed with a 7-3 decision at 133. Sophomore
Ryan Budzek (Point Pleasant Boro, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) won by disqualification at 141. Budzek, who is also ranked sixth nationally at 141, did not permit a point on the day. He posted an 8-0 major against Jake Sepor of RIT, and muscled a 3-0 victory over Frank Crippen of Wesleyan. Sophomore
Constantine Rissiotis (Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) and
Stephen Boncimino (Freehold, NJ/Howell) registered pins in 1:28 and 3:34 at 197 and heavyweight.
Â
The 25-12 triumph over Wesleyan was a fiercer match than the score may indicate. Six bouts were decided by three points or less, but the Lions battled to win four of those and seven overall. Junior
Dan Wojtaszek (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) pinned his opponent at 184 just 1:19 into the match. Herring came through with a key major decision (18-6) when TCNJ led by only three points. That propelled the Lions to win their next three bouts and seal their tenth straight.
Â
The championship final is slated for 1:30 p.m.
