Jersey City, NJ … For the fifth consecutive game and seventh in their last eight, The College of New Jersey women's basketball team walked off the court winners.
Â
After facing stiff competition to open the 2015-16 campaign, the Lions (7-6, 4-3 NJAC) shouldered its way past the .500 mark for the first time as they defeated New Jersey City University 67-32 on Saturday afternoon in Jersey City.
Â
TCNJ held the Gothic Knights to a season-low 37 points on 27 percent shooting. The Lions also caused 17 turnovers, tallied 20 points off of those turnovers, and dominated bench scoring by an 18-1 margin.
Â
Ten different Lions registered points in the game led by
senior Angelica Esposito (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney). The senior guard bucketed 15 points and was again, perfect from the charity stripe. Esposito is now 36-for-37 (97 percent) at the free-throw line this season, a major contributor to TCNJ leading the conference in foul shooting by better than 10 percent.
Â
Sophomore
Charlotte Schlum (East Hanover, NJ/Morris Catholic) also reached double figures with 11 points, including a trio of three-point field goals. Junior
Kim Dana (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) distributed a season-best seven assists to go along with eight points as she continues to engineer TCNJ on the offensive and defensive ends.
Â
NJCU jumped on the Lions at the onset, taking a quick 7-0 lead. A three-pointer by Schlum stopped the bleeding and that would spark a 15-2 run for TCNJ. The Gothic Knights opened the second quarter with a layup, but that was followed by a 9-0 run for the Lions that put the contest completely in their control.
Â
TCNJ led by 15 points entering the final period, but made sure they would walk away with their fifth straight. They mounted a 15-0 run in under five minutes to open the fourth and they secured their seventh win overall and fourth league victory.
Â
Senior from
Christina Merlin (North Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) finished with six points, five rebounds, and four assists, while classmate
Jess Lynch (Newtown, CT/Newtown) also grabbed five boards, four points, two assists, and a pair of steals.
Â
The Lions will have a day off before hosting Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday night at 6 p.m. in Packer Hall.
