Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Scarlet Raiders steal 1-0 win from Lions

Ewing, NJ … Despite controlling the majority of play for the second consecutive game, The College of New Jersey men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Rutgers-Newark at the TCNJ Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.

It marked the second straight contest that the Lions (5-5-1, 2-2 NJAC) held a large advantage in shots, but they could not find the back of the net. TCNJ fell to Rutgers University Camden by a score of 1-0 earlier in the week.

The Lions outshot the Scarlet Raiders (11-2, 3-1 NJAC) 26-6 in the game, but RN put four on goal and one into the back of net by Alex Torres to steal the New Jersey Athletic Conference road win.

TCNJ took control from the onset and dominated play in the opening period. They rattled off the first eight shots of the game, but didn't have a true quality scoring chance in the 30 minutes.

Rutgers-Newark made the most of their first shot of the game at 31:23 into the match. Stefano Muniz found Torres free at the top of the box and slotted short pass to his foot. Torres took the ball to his left and deposited his shot in the right pocket of the net for a 1-0 lead. It was the third goal of the season for Torres

The Scarlet Raiders packed it in for most of the second half. With just over 13 minutes remaining, Nick Sample had a decent look on the left side, but his shot skipped wide. Two minutes later, Joerg Jauk was open on the right side and Sample served an aerial ball across the box. Jauk attempted a side volley, but his shot went wide to the near side.

Sample served up another ball to Jauk in the box from the left side, but Jauk's header went wide left as TCNJ continued to apply pressure on the RN defense.

With 5:30 remaining, Sample fired another low shot from the top of the key that raced just left of the post.

The Lions had one final desperate chance in the final seconds when Nick Costelloe volleyed a ball out of the air from the right side. But that shot went into the side net as time expired.

Scarlet Raiders goalkeeper Andres Medina stopped two shots for the win, while Lion's goalie Dan Walsh made three saves.

TCNJ continues its regular season schedule on  Monday when they host College of Staten Island at 7:30 p.m in Lions Stadium.
