Galloway, NJ… Behind 16 points and four rebounds off the bench from
Chiara Palombi (Manasquan, NJ / Manasquan), The College of New Jersey women's basketball team (2-2, 1-1 NJAC) upset pre-season coaches favorite and previously unbeaten 23rd ranked Stockton University (4-1, 1-1 NJAC), 63-59 on Wednesday night.
After ceding the game's first basket, the Lions immediately went on a 7-0 run, capped by a
Kim Dana (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) three-pointer to take an early 7-2 lead. Dana finished with a team-high 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting.
Leading 9-6, TCNJ extended the advantage with a 10-3 run, including six points from
Cindy Napolitano (Wall, NJ / St. Rose) to push the lead into double digits. The Lions led after the first quarter 19-14.
After the Ospreys cut the Lion's lead to three early in the second quarter, TCNJ again responded with another 7-0 run, highlighted by four points from Palombi. Minutes later, another Dana shot from distance gave the Lions their largest lead of the game at 11 en route to a 35-29 halftime advantage.
Stockton opened the second half on a 6-0 run to tie the score at 35, and would take their first lead since 2-0 on a three-pointer from Mikila Stefanski later in the quarter at 48-47. Dana immediately responded with a step back cross-over shot from deep to reclaim the lead, and the Lions led 50-48 as the third quarter expired.
Stefanski would again hit from behind the arc to give the Ospreys a 54-53 lead, and the Lions were up for challenge and used a 6-0 run that included the fifth and final lead change of the game.
Leading 61-56 with under a minute remaining Palombi, came up big again stealing an Osprey entry pass to gain possession. The Lions fended off the final Stockton comeback attempt to secure the conference road win.
In the loss Sasha Williams finished with a game high 18 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks.
Charlotte Schum (East Hanover, NJ / Morris Catholic) led the Lions in rebounding for the second consecutive game, finishing with eight boards to go along with six points.
TCNJ outshot Stockton 42.9% (24-for-56) to 36.8% (21-for-57).
The Lions now return home Saturday, December 3 at 1:00 pm to host Kean University.
