Clermont, Fla. ... The College of New Jersey softball team split a double header for the second time in less than 24 hours in Clermont, Fla on Sunday.
Â
After finishing their second game on Saturday close to 11Â p.m., the Lions returned to the diamond to play at 9 and 11a.m. In the opener, TCNJ blanked Keene State College 7-0 behind strong performances from sophomore
Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) and freshman
Jess Santelli (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough). In the nightcap, the offense sputtered and fell to Frostburg State University, 2-0.
Â
Game One: TCNJ 7, Keene State College 0Â
Santelli was a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four runs batted in. Her two-run double highlighted a five-run inning in the fourth. Santelli stroked another run-scoring double in the sixth, and then plated her fourth run of the day with a single in the seventh.
Â
The game was scoreless through three innings until sophomore
Jenna Schwartz (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) broke the deadlock with a run-scoring single to center. Santelli extended the lead to 3-0 before rookie
Gaby Bennett (Hamilton, NJ/Steiner) belted a two-run double to give Platt a five-run cushion.
Â
Platt was near-flawless on the mound, pitching six innings of scoreless relief. She limited the Owls to three hits, did not issue a walk, and struck out four. Platt moved to 3-0 on the season.
Â
Game Two: Frostburg State 2Â TCNJ 0Â
Frostburg scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to register a 2-0 victory.
Renay Aubel lifted a sacrifice fly in the third and
Emily Zengel stroke an RBI-single in the fifth. That would be all Frostburg pitcher
Allison Short would need as she posted a two-hit shutout. She allowed just one TCNJ runner to reach second base through seven innings.
Â
TCNJ starter
Ashtin Helmer (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) pitched well for the Lions. She surrendered just two runs and struck out three in the tough-luck loss.
Â
Santelli and Schwartz had the lone hits for TCNJ. Santelli has hit safely in all seven games this season.
Â
The Lions are back on the diamond Tuesday morning when they face Fitchburg State and 9 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. game with Westfield State University.
