Winter Haven, Fla. ... The College of New Jersey baseball team scored double digit runs for the sixth time in eight games as they defeated Eastern Connecticut State 10-9 on Saturday.
The Lions (7-1) got off to another quick start, scoring multiple runs in each of the first four innings to take a 10-1 lead. They registered 18 hits in the game with each player in the line-up collecting at least one hit. Sophomore
Zach Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) led the attack with four hits and three RBI, while
Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) finished with three hits and two runs scored.
Senior
John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills) and Roberts singled in the opening frame and executed a double stea. Shindler then delivered his first hit of the game to score both runners. TCNJ put up two more runs in the second, capped by a Roberts run-scoring single.
The Lions opened the game up with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Senior
Garen Turner (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) belted an RBI-triple, junior
C.J. Gearhart (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) drove in a run with a single to center, and
Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) lifted a sacrifice fly in the third and run-scoring single in the fourth.
Senior
Steven Volpe (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) kept the Eastern Connecticut State offense in check. He was touched for a run in the second inning and two in the sixth. Volpe (2-0) worked six innings and struck out four to notch his second win of the season.
The Warriors made it interesting with a six-run eighth inning. Sophomore
Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) came in to slam the door in the ninth. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning, ending the game on a fly ball to center to register his first save of the season.
Rizzi stole five bases in the game to raise his season total to 15. Shindler is currently hitting .586 (17-for-29) and Gearhart is batting .529 (9-for-17).
TCNJ will play a doubleheader today against Westfield State University. The first game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
