Lions halted by Fords

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey baseball team had its 11-game winning streak snapped, falling to Haverford 10-1 on Thursday afternoon in George Ackerman Park.

The Lions (14-2) will now set their sets on New Jersey Athletic Conference opponents as they open conference play this Saturday at Kean University at 11:30 a.m.

The Fords (11-6) had a terrific day at the plate, amassing 17 hits and plating runs in six out of nine innings. Zach Taylor led the charge, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in. Matt Goss and Nick Ott each went 3-for-5 as Goss crossed home plate four time in the game and Ott drove in three.

Haverford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third before TCNJ responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Senior John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills) drew a walk, stole second, and eventually came around to score on an RBI ground out by Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough).

That would be all starter Tom Phillips and the Ford staff would surrender. Phillips went six innings, game up just one hit and struck out three to even his mound record to 1-1.

TCNJ freshman Dylan Crowley (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) pitched five and two-thirds innings of relief, allowing just one earned run. Junior Patrick McCarthy (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) was touched for two unearned runs in the ninth and struck out two.

The Lions will visit the Cougars for a pair of games in Union, NJ this Saturday.
