TCNJ Splits with Clarkson and Salisbury

Lions top Golden Knights, fall to #11 Sea Gulls

Salisbury, MD … The College of New Jersey softball team faced Clarkson University and Salisbury University in day two of the Salisbury Invitational. In the opening game, TCNJ came out on top by a score of 9-1. The Lions then faced a tough Salisbury squad and were handed an 8-0 loss.

Game One: TCNJ 9, Clarkson 1

Much like the meeting between these two teams on Saturday, TCNJ got on the board first. But unlike yesterday's game, the Lions kept building on that lead and never let the Golden Knights get close.

Steph Vuono (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) belted her first homerun of the season to highlight the win. She went 1-for-3 and drove in one run.

The Lions offense was strong as eight players recorded hits.  Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) went a perfect 4-for-4, while Madison Levine (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) and Jess Santelli (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) each went 2-for-4, driving in three and two runs respectively.

Ashtin Helmer (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) pitched all six innings to earn the victory on the mound.  She allowed only three hits, one run, issued just walks, and struck out three batters.

Game Two: Salisbury 8, TCNJ 0

Pitching and defense by the 11th-ranked See Gulls shut down the TCNJ bats, permitting just two hits in the game. Freshman Brooke Mizelle moved to 4-1 on the season as she struck out six and did not walk a batter.

The Lions biggest threat came in the second inning when they had runners on second and third with one out. Mizelle got a strikeout and ground out to escape the jam.

Salisbury scored a pair of runs in the first courtesy of a two-run home run from catcher Paige Krussman. They tacked on two more in the third, a run in the fourth, and three in the sixth.

Santelli and Platt each had hits for TCNJ. who both went 1-for-3. This loss puts the Lions at 2-1 on the young season.

The Lions are back in action on March 12 when they take on Calvin College at 5 p.m. That game will be the first of 10 for TCNJ down in Clermont, FL for their spring break trip.
