Galloway, NJ … Freshman
Michael Fischer (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) fired a complete-game shutout to lead The College of New Jersey baseball team to a 3-0 victory over Stockton University on Monday.
Â
The win was the fifth straight for the Lions and raised their overall record to 19-4 and 4-2 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play.
Â
Fischer was masterful, retiring the first 10 batters he face and never allowing an Osprey to reach third base through nine innings. He was touched for five hits, walked none, and faced only 30 batters as the TCNJ defense recorded a pair of double plays in the game. Fischer is off to a 3-0 start in his collegiate career and carries an earned run average of 2.45.
Â
Senior
Garen Turner (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley) broke a scoreless tie in the sixth with a two-out, RBI-single to score
John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills). Sophomore
Zach Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) delivered a clutch, two-run single with the bases loaded in the eight to provide Fischer with additional cushion to polish off the win.
Â
Shindler and
Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) each finished with two hits in the game. Rizzi scored twice and Roberts, who earlier in the day was named the NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, also crossed home plate.
Â
With a runner on in the bottom of the eighth, TCNJ turned a 6-4-3 double play to stave off any threat of a rally. Fischer retired the side in order in the ninth
Â
Each of Fischer's three wins have been complete games. This was his first nine-inning stint and first shutout.
Â
The Lions are scheduled to visit Farmingdale State College for a non-conference game tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3:30 p.m.
