Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision to Rutgers-Newark University in a game called after seven complete innings on Thursday afternoon at George Ackerman Park.
Â
The Lions dropped to 26-7 overall and 10-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raiders improved to 14-22 overall and 6-9 in the NJAC.
Â
Wet conditions made it difficult on both sides, but Rutgers-Newark was able to generate enough offense to secure a road win.
Anthony Rosoline kept the Lion hitters off-balance and improved to 7-1 on the season. He limited TCNJ to only two hits over seven innings and struck out one.
Â
Lions' sophomore
Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) struck out the side in the first. He went 1-2-3 in the second and had four strikeouts registered by the end of the second.
Â
Rutgers-Newark took a 1-0 lead in the third.
Ross Halkias singled to left and advanced on an error. He moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brian Boulineau
Â
The Scarlet Raiders extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth.
Gerry Patrizio dropped a single into short right field to score Boulineau, who had walked and stole second.
Josh Cote then lined a two-out, two-run single to left-center to plate Patrizio and
Billy Taylor.
Â
The Loins' offense could not solve Rosoline. Senior
Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) tripled to right-center in the fourth, but was left stranded.
John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills) doubled to left-center in the sixth, but Rosoline got a fly ball and pop out to end the threat.
Â
In the top of the eighth, the Scarlet Raiders produced another run with one out, and the game was called as conditions became unplayable.
TCNJ will have a second shot at Rutgers-Newark tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
