Glassboro, N.J. … The College of New Jersey softball team fought hard but ultimately fell to Rowan University in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship game. The Profs took an early lead and never looked back, securing an 11-0 victory in five innings.
Â
The Profs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lions got out of a bases loaded jam to limit the host to just those two runs.
Â
Rowan continued to apply pressure on offense, increasing its lead to 4-0 in the second. They erupted for seven runs off eight hits in the third to take command of the contest.
Â
Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) got the start on the mound. She pitched two and one third innings and struck out one batter before
Sara Bielamowicz (Lawrence Township, NJ/Lawrence) came in briefly for relief.
Katie Hourihan (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) took over pitching for the remainder of the third inning and finished out the game. She allowed three hits but did not give up any runs. Â
Â
Leading the offense for the Lions were
Colleen Phelan (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional), who was 1-for-1 with a double, and
Daniella Marino (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan), who also went 1-for-1 from the plate.
Â
TCNJ has an overall record of 28-14 on the season. They will now wait for the NCAA Division III selection show on Monday, May 9 at 1 p.m. to see if they receive an at large bid to the 2016 NCAA Division III Softball National Championship Tournament.
