Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

TCNJ turns back Ursinus, 3-1

The Lions earned a 3-1 victory over the Bears

Ewing, N.J. … The College of New Jersey women's soccer team hosted Ursinus College tonight in Lions Stadium and came away with a 3-1 victory.

TCNJ took the early 1-0 lead on a goal from senior Marissa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, NY/Pearl River), her first of the season. Christine Levering (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) started the play with a perfectly placed pass to the waiting foot of Scognamiglio, who redirected the ball into the lower left hand corner of the net.

The Lions controlled most of the first half offensively. They outshot the Bears 11-3, but Ursinus was able to get a tally of their own from Erin Farrell with less than two minutes remaining in the half.

The second half was much like the first, with TCNJ dominating offensively. In the second half alone, the Lions got off 22 shots, two of which were converted into goals.

Levering added to her point total for the night when she gave her team back the lead. She shot from 30 yards out and the ball tipped off the fingertips of the leaping goalkeeper and in to make the score, 2-1.

Elizabeth Thoresen (Colts Neck, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) added an insurance goal to give TCNJ the 3-1 victory. Thoresen dribbled in on net, around a defender and shot past net-minder Courtney Sullivan on the right hand side.

Jessica Weeder (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) got the start in net for the Lions and made one save during the contest.

TCNJ is back in action on Saturday, September 17 when they host William Paterson University for their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start in the TCNJ Soccer Complex.
